About this series

This is headline inflation: the year-on-year change in the national Consumer Price Index, published monthly by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. It answers the everyday question — how much more expensive is life than a year ago — across a basket that spans food, housing, transport, health and more.

Year-on-year is the figure most people mean by "inflation", and it's what the State Bank watches when it sets the policy rate. Read it alongside the urban and rural breakdowns, the by-group indices (to see whether food or energy is driving a move), and core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy to show the underlying trend.
